A philosophical movement, initiated in the 1930s by the Polish-American philosopher Alfred Korzybski (1879–1950), seeking to develop public awareness of the conventional basis of the relationships between words and things in order to improve clarity of thought and communication. This bears comparison with the Saussurean emphasis on the conventional nature of the relationship between the signifier and the signified in linguistic signs. See alsosemantics.
