Produced by genetic modification of the plant or animal. EU legislation requires that all foods containing genetically modified (GM) protein or DNA, including those in catering outlets, must be so labelled, unless there is less than 0.9% GM material in the food. Products made from GM crops, but highly purified, so that no GM protein or DNA is present, were formerly exempt from labelling, but now must be labelled. Foods manufactured using products of GM organisms (e.g. cheese made using GM chymosin) and meat, milk, and eggs from animals fed on GM crops need not be labelled as containing GM material.
