A highly toxic aminoglycoside antibiotic (G418) related to gentamicin but for which there are resistance genes. The resistance genes, though bacterial in origin, can be expressed and are effective in eukaryotic cells. Vectors are often engineered to have the resistance genes so that transformed cells are selected by their survival.
