A soy-derived isoflavone that is an antioxidant but has a range of other activities, including interaction with oestrogen receptors (a phytoestrogen). Competes for the ATP binding site of many protein tyrosine kinases and also inhibits the mammalian hexose transporter GLUT1 and topoisomerase-II. A potent vasorelaxant, probably by binding and opening chloride channels (CFTR and NKCC1).
