Quick Reference

Medical examination of the genitalia. Often this is an emotionally delicate matter, especially for women and girls when the examining physician is a man, and in some cultures, as well as in the most permissive, increasingly the presence of a chaperon is mandatory. In the armed forces, the procedure, colloquially known as “short arms inspection,” has been used for about 100 years as a way to screen for venereal or sexually transmitted diseases, although its efficacy for this purpose is doubtful.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
