A sexually transmitted disease, caused by herpesvirus type 2 or other types of herpesvirus, that causes ulceration and inflammation of the skin and mucosal surfaces of the genital tract. It is highly contagious, indolent, and often resistant to treatment, but it resolves well if antiviral treatment begins early. It has occurred in near-epidemic form among promiscuous adolescents and young adults in several large urban centers in the United States and Europe.
