genuine occupational qualification

Quick Reference

A legal sanction in the UK that allows discrimination on the ground of sex because of an essential requirement of the particular job. For example, when casting for a play or a film, the director can audition only women for a female role; the key word is ‘genuine’—it would not be sufficient to claim, for example, that you want to employ a male porter because ‘a man has always done that job’ or to employ a female secretary because ‘it is women's work’.
