Quick Reference

The geranyl group is geraniol (a monoterpenoid) lacking the terminal -OH, a prenyl group that as geranyl pyrophosphate is an intermediate in the HMG-CoA reductase pathway which leads to the synthesis of farnesyl pyrophosphate, geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate and cholesterol. The geranyl-geranyl group is post-translationally added by geranyl transferase (farnesyl pyrophosphate synthetase; EC, 419 aa) to some cytoplasmic proteins, generally at a CAAX motif (where X is usually leucine) and serves as a membrane attachment device. See farnesylation.
