London début 1988 with LSO, followed by CBSO and RLPO. Succeeded Temirkanov as chief cond. and art. dir. Kirov Opera and Ballet Th., 1988. Prin. cond. Rotterdam PO from 1995. Prin. cond. LSO from 2006. NY Met début 1994 (Otello). At his instigation, co‐operation in prods. begun with Royal Opera, CG (Tarkovsky and Boris Godunov, Moshinsky and Otello, Freeman and The Fiery Angel).
