(b Schwanberg, 1845; d Vienna, 1925). Austrian conductor and composer (under pseudonym Wenzel Ecker). Th. cond., Linz, from 1865; 2nd cond. Vienna Opera from 1874. Succeeded Brahms as cond. of Gesellschaft Konzerte, Vienna, 1880. Cond. Boston SO 1884–9, returning to Vienna and the Gesellschaft 1890–5. Resumed Boston post 1898–1906, when he retired. Comp. operetta, requiem, orch. mus., songs, etc.
