During pregnancy, glycogen metabolism is sometimes temporarily disrupted, leading to glycosuria and other signs of glucose intolerance. This is not true diabetes mellitus, but may be a premonitory manifestation of later onset of diabetes, so preventive medicine includes extra vigilance when women have had glucosuria during pregnancy.
