Quick Reference

(1644–1702).

Italian painter and architect, he remodelled the Avila Chapel, Santa Maria in Trastévere, Rome (c.1686), in which space is magically extended in all directions, notably upwards, where angels carry a ring under the cupola. Even richer is his Chapel of Santa Cecilia, San Carlo ai Catinari (1691–1702). The influences of Bernini, Borromini, and Guarini were strong in his work.
