Greek painter and graphic artist. He studied under Bissière at the Académie Ranson, Paris, and his early work was strongly influenced by Braque and Picasso. However, after his return to Athens in 1934 he also became interested in Mediterranean landscape and Greek popular art. After the Second World War he was recognized at home and abroad as Greece's leading painter, admired for his success in achieving a synthesis between his country's ancient traditions and modern artistic movements. Besides painting, he made numerous book illustrations.
