Dhaka-born amir of the Jamaat-i Islami of Bangladesh from 1971 to 2000. Opposed the imposition of Urdu as the official language of united Pakistan as a student leader, and supported Pakistani army action against the Bangladesh independence movement in 1971. Spearheaded the revival of Jamaat-i Islami in postindependence Bangladesh against considerable odds.
