Quick Reference

Finnish architect. He designed (with Eliel Saarinen) the Helsinki and Viipuri Railway Stations (from 1904). His work was in the National Romantic style, of which the Villa at Hvitträsk (1901–3) and National Museum, Helsinki (1902–5), both designed with Lindgren and Saarinen, are good examples, drawing on stylistic aspects from Britain, the USA, and Vienna. His work was also Influenced by Jugendstil tendencies, but his Wuorio Office Building, Helsinki (1908–10), designed independently, was free from both Jugendstil and National Romanticism.
