A town NW of Jerusalem whose inhabitants tricked the invading Israelites into a treaty (Josh. 9: 4), though later Saul attacked them savagely (2 Sam. 21: 2). The pool of Gibeon (2 Sam. 2: 13) was discovered during excavations in 1956–62; it provided water in the event of siege.
