An improved Romanovsky-type stain that contains both methylene blue (basic) and eosin (acidic) and will therefore differentiate acid and basic granules in granulocytes. Often used to stain blood films that are suspected to contain protozoan parasites. Also used for staining chromosomes (G banding).
