Quick Reference

An exceptionally long, and apparently relatively rare, electrical discharge that reaches from the top of a cumulonimbus cloud to the ionosphere at an altitude of approximately 90 km. First discovered in 2001 in Puerto Rico, 30-odd have been recorded, most over open tropical oceans, with few over land. They appear to be related to the shorter blue jets. It is suspected that the lower portions are blue, and the upper, red, like sprites.
