(b Cameron, Missouri, 1912; d Columbia, S. Carolina, 1978). Amer. composer. Played tb. in jazz bands. Worked as composer, arranger, and trombonist, Fort Worth Radio, Texas, 1932–5. Programme dir. and producer NCB, NY, 1944–54, working with Toscanini. His comps. are in a popular and traditional style, influenced by jazz, hymns, dances, and Sibelius, Strauss, etc. Composer of 10 short operas; 12 syms. and sym.
