Several varieties of herb that have been widely used for many centuries in Chinese traditional medicine as a tonic and supposed sexual stimulant. It is said to reduce symptoms of fatigue, enhance hormonal activity, and restore or strengthen sexual potency. In experimental studies, it has been found to stimulate corticosteroid and testosterone secretion, raise blood pressure, and elevate mood. It may sometimes be mildly addictive and therefore can be harmful, especially to elderly men with cardiovascular disease.
