Quick Reference

A book by Mary Cowden Clarke (1809–98), published in three volumes (1851–2), often maligned as an extreme instance of the critical tendency to treat Shakespeare's characters as real people, but in fact an imaginative work of fiction based on these characters. With her distinguished husband, Charles (1787–1877), she edited the plays (1864–8).

Subjects: Shakespeare Studies and Criticism.
