Ballet in three acts with prologue, with choreography and libretto by Filippo Taglioni, and music by Hermann Schmidt and Daniel Auber. Premiered 5 Dec. 1838 at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg with Marie Taglioni and Nikolai Osipovich Glotz. Lauretta, the daughter of a Duke, is kidnapped as a child and raised by a tribe of gypsies. She falls in love with Ivan, son of the Governor of Nishni Novgorod. The title role was particularly associated with Taglioni. Not to be confused with Mazilier's ballet La Gypsy or La Gipsy (1839).
