Quick Reference

There is no lack of evidence for glacier retreat: for example, Kulkarni et al. (2007) Current Science 92, 1 report that nearly 500 glaciers in the Chenab, Parabati, and Baspa basins have shrunk more than 20% over a 40-year period; Joughin et al. (2006) Nature 432 report on ‘catastrophic retreat’ in west Greenland; while Owen and Lehmkuhl (2005) Boreas 34 comment on Tibet. Barry (2006) PPG30, 1 provides a useful summary table. See also de Woul et al. (2007) Geophys. Res Abs. 9.

There are reports that some glaciers are extending: Howat et al. (2007) Climate Dynam. 28, 1 report that the Mt Shasta, Calif., glaciers have grown by 30% since 1960.
