A term that appeared in the World Bank's World Development Report in 1993, also called burden of disease, to describe the loss of healthy years of life in a specified population, usually that of a nation or occasionally a specified group. It is assessed in a population by disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The concept gave rise to some important activities and initiatives by the WHO.
