An instrument carried by the European satellite ERS-2 for mapping the global ozone layer. Its two-dimensional mapping function was extended to three dimensions by the more sophisticated equipment carried by Envisat (see Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars). GOME-2 is a greatly improved version that is being carried by MetOp satellites and which monitors ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), water vapour (H2O), bromine oxide (BrO), and other atmospheric gases.
