Quick Reference

A WHO-Canada collaborative network of Internet-based early warning systems for contagious disease outbreaks that uses routine national and regional disease notification systems and also media reports of unusual outbreaks of contagious or other diseases (e.g., chemical poisoning). Information gathered at the main clearinghouse in Ottawa is transmitted to national public health agencies worldwide. This network has become increasingly relevant in the current period of heightened concern about bioterrorism.
