Opera fest. founded in 1975 near Cooperstown, NY. Name derives from that given by James Fenimore Cooper in his Leather‐Stocking Tales to Lake Otsega, on the shores of which the fest. takes place. 8‐week summer season of 45 perfs. of 4 operas, all in new prods., perf. in 900‐seat Alice Busch Opera Th. (opened 1987). All operas sung in Eng. until 1992, now some original‐language perfs. with surtitles. Many new or rare works given in co‐operation with NY City Opera, such as William Schuman's A Question of Taste (1989) and the f. Amer. p. of Mozart's Il re pastore (1991).
