glutamate carboxypeptidase II

Quick Reference

A membrane-associated zinc metalloenzyme (GCP-2, NAAG peptidase, EC, 750 aa) expressed in many tissues, not just brain, that catalyses the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter N-acetyl-l-aspartyl-l-glutamate (NAAG) to N-acetyl-l-aspartate and l-glutamate; it also hydrolyses polyglutamylated folates in the intestine (and is thus also folylpolyglutamate carboxypeptidase, FGCP) and is identical to prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSM). GCP-2 inhibitors have been shown to provide some neuroprotection in preclinical models of stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and neuropathic pain.
