Overview

glycogenin

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A self-glucosylating protein (333 aa), a glycosyl transferase, expressed prominently in human skeletal muscle and heart (glycogenin 1), where it primes glycogen granule synthesis. Multiple isoforms of glycogenin 2 are found in the liver. Glycogenin binds glucose from UDP-glucose, further glucose units are added until the chain is around eight units long, then glycogen synthetase continues the process.
