An important intermediate in carbohydrate metabolism. Before glucose can be broken down into pyruvic acid during glycolysis, it has to be activated by ATP; glucose 6-phosphate is the product of that activation. In addition, glucose phosaphate is produced when muscle glycogen is mobilized.
