Indian mathematical statistician, specializing in the analysis of multivariate data, whose career was in the United States. Gnanadesikan was educated at U Madras (BSc 1952, MA 1953) and UNC (PhD 1957). In 1959 he joined AT&T Labs working alongside Wilk and Mallows. In 1991 he joined the faculty at Rutgers U. He was President of the IASC in 1981 and President of the IMS in 1989.
