A measurement of the relative protrusion of the jaw. It is expressed as a ratio of the distance from the basion to the nasion to the distance from the basion to the prosthion multiplied by 100. A gnathic index of less than 98 is classed as retrognathic (retruded jaw), 98–103 as mesognathic (average or intermediate jaw), and greater than 103 as prognathic (protruding jaw).
