Plants, with a fossil record from the early Cretaceous, of particular interest because they show features of both conifers and angiosperms. It has been suggested that the Gnetales are the closest living relatives of angiosperms. Although commonly classed as gymnosperms, they possess flower-like structures and are sometimes grouped with the angiosperms in the subdivision anthophytes. See also bennettitales.
