In the days of sail the sailor's name for a coastguard. Its origin is obscure, but until 1925 the British coastguard service was administered by the Admiralty and manned by naval pensioners, and the term was probably a slang name for a pensioner. In the US Navy a coastguard was known as a ‘gob’.
