(1928– )

American Superrealist painter, active in his native California, where he studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, 1950–53, and has taught at various schools and universities. His main subject is the automobile, often shown at a garage or service station. He works by projecting a slide or transparency on to the canvas and although he uses traditional brushes rather than airbrushes, his finish is seamlessly impersonal: ‘Emphasis should be placed not on essences, generalizations or formal structures but specific, objective things and places. Looking supersedes formal contrivance, depiction becomes an extension of seeing.’

Subjects: Art.
