Austrian-Americanastronomer. In 1948, with H. Bondi and F. Hoyle, he proposed the steady-state theory of the Universe in which matter is continuously created. In 1968 he and Hoyle explained the signals from the recently discovered pulsars as synchrotron radiation beamed out by rapidly rotating neutron stars.
