A system of flattened, smooth-surfaced, membranaceous cisternae, arranged in parallel 20–30 nm apart and surrounded by numerous vesicles. A feature of almost all eukaryotic cells, this structure is involved in the packaging of many products of cell metabolism. It is named after Camillo Golgi.
