A group of proteins that are the product of a region of three exons upstream of the classic myelin basic protein (MBP) exons. They are found in both nervous and immune systems. Oligodendrocytes express golli mRNA primarily during intermediate stages of differentiation and golli proteins may promote proliferation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells. In a murine experimental system a golli-interacting protein (GIP) was identified and appears to be the murine homologue of human nuclear LIM interactor-interacting factor and thus a potential regulator of differentiation. One of the golli proteins (golli BG21) can serve as a negative regulator of signalling pathways in T cells.
