Russian painter and designer. He designed both opera and ballet for the Imperial Theatres in St Petersburg and Moscow, although his most famous commissions were for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes: Fokine's Firebird (1910) and the Act II Swan Lake production (with Konstantin Korovin) in 1911. He also designed Fokine's Jota Aragonesa (1916) and Lopukhov's Solveig (1927).
