Ger. soprano. Début 1935 at Fürth (Agathe in Der Freischütz). Joined opera co. at Plauen and became member Dresden State Opera 1940–50. Débuts: CG 1951; Salzburg Fest. 1951; NY Met 1954. Vienna State Opera 1951–70, esp. in Strauss roles. Created title‐role in Liebermann's Penelope (Salzburg 1954). Repertory of over 120 parts. Noted for her Salome, Elektra, Marie, Isolde, and Tosca.
