A Dutch Indologist and Sanskritist, who held the chair at the University of Utrecht, and published extensively on many aspects of Hinduism. His books included Aspects of Early Viṣṇuism (1954), Die Religionen Indiens (1960–64), Change and Continuity in Indian Religion (1965), Loka: World and Heaven in the Veda (1965), Viṣṇuism and Śivaism: A Comparison (1970), and Vedic Ritual: The Non-Solemn Rites (1980).
