American statistician and sociologist. Goodman was a graduate of mathematics and sociology at Syracuse U in 1948. After obtaining his MA and PhD degrees from Princeton U in 1950, he joined the faculty at U Chicago, becoming full Professor in 1955. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 1968. He was elected to membership of the NAS in 1974. He was the IMS Rietz Lecturer in 1983 and was presented with the Wilks Award of the ASA in 1985. In 1986 he moved to UCB. He is a member of AAAS and NAS.
