Fruit of the shrub, Ribes uva-crispa (syn. R. grossularia). The British National Fruit Collection has 150 varieties. An 80‐g portion is a rich source of vitamin C; provides 2.4 g of dietary fibre; supplies 12 kcal (50 kJ).

A variety of unrelated fruits are also known as gooseberries. Ceylon gooseberry is Dovyalis hebecarpa, also known as kitembilla, Chinese gooseberry is kiwi, Indian gooseberry is emblic, otaheite or star gooseberry is Phyllanthus acidus.
