Russian dancer and ballet director. He studied at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, graduating in 1968. He joined the Bolshoi Ballet where he danced all the leading male roles in the standard repertory. In 1973 he won the Gold Medal at the Moscow competition. He started to choreograph in 1981 and in 1983 became artistic director of the Moscow-based Russian State Ballet (formerly the Russian Ballet Company of Moscow), for whom he choreographed most of his ballets. Director of the Bolshoi Ballet (1995–7).
