[W gorau, best].
Slayer of Ysbaddaden Pencawr in Culhwch ac Olwen. Goreu was one of twenty-four sons of Custennin, his mother being an unnamed woman, the sister of Igerna; this made him a cousin of Arthur. When Ysbaddaden killed both his father and his many brothers, Goreu escaped when his mother hid him in a cup-board. While still a boy, he distinguished himself as an ally of Culhwch, once fighting through three courtyards of men, winning for himself the title of ‘The Best’ [gorau]. His beheading of Ysbaddaden avenged both his father and his brothers.
