[ScG gormshuil, blue-eye; mhór, big, great].
Celebrated witch of Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands. On the Isle of Mull she was known as Gormal of Mull, often a benefactor of local interests. Under the name Gormla she was a patron of Clan Cameron. Gormla's warning to Lochiel of the Camerons, against the treachery of the Duke of Atholl, during a dispute over ownership of Aird-Raineach, gave rise to the motto of that family: ‘Come hither, come hither,/ You shall get flesh, you shall get flesh.’ See Alasdair Camshron, ‘Gornshuil Mhór na Maighe’, An Gaidheal (Mar. 1957).
