Novel by James Baldwin, published in 1953.

On his fourteenth birthday in 1935, John Grimes faces the issue of religious conversion in the storefront Temple of the Fire Baptized while he wrestles with boyhood problems of sex and anger at his parents. His father, Gabriel, like other relatives and ancestors of young John, is revealed through flashbacks that illuminate John's own problems. John is the illegitimate son of Gabriel's third wife, adopted by him after their marriage. Guilt, bitterness, a sense of doom, and spiritual strivings affect young John, as they have his family before him.
