A programme of teacher training which allows graduate trainee teachers to gain their teaching qualification while working in schools. Although originally aimed at mature entrants to the profession, age discrimination legislation prevents recruitment on this criterion alone. The training takes between three months and a full academic year to complete. The programme can be undertaken in any maintained school in England or Wales (other than schools in special measures and pupil referral units) which is prepared to employ the trainee as an unqualified teacher. Applicants are required to hold General Certificate of Secondary Education qualifications in English and mathematics at grade C or above (or the equivalent), as well as a recognized degree. See also qualified teacher status.
