The gaining of graduate status through successful completion of undergraduate studies. This is usually marked by a graduation ceremony, attended by dignitaries of the awarding institution as well as by the graduates and their families and friends. This provides a formal occasion for the awarding of certificates and other honours, and the event itself is often referred to in brief as a ‘graduation’. The term has been taken up and used in a wider context, so that now we may speak of pupils ‘graduating’ from school, or from one phase of schooling to another. In all contexts it indicates the progression from one grade to a higher one.
