Ballet in one act with choreography and libretto by Lichine, music by Johann Strauss, arranged by Antal Dorati, and designs by Benois. Premiered 28 Feb. 1940 by the Original Ballet Russe at the Theatre Royal, Sydney, with Riabouchinska, Lichine, Orlov, and Runanine. The ballet, set in 1840s Vienna, is a comic-romantic depiction of a group of young military cadets visiting a girls' boarding school for their graduation ball. A perennial favourite, it was revived for many companies, including the Royal Danish Ballet (1952) and London Festival Ballet (1957).
